Liverpool winger Mohamed Salah has revealed that he is “far away” from agreeing to a new deal with the Premier League club, raising concerns among fans about his future. Salah’s current contract expires at the end of the season, allowing him to negotiate a free transfer with non-English clubs starting 1 January.
The Egyptian forward, 32, has been in exceptional form, scoring his 20th goal of the season during Liverpool’s emphatic 5-0 victory over West Ham at the London Stadium. The win extended Liverpool’s lead at the top of the Premier League table to eight points.
Speaking to Sky Sports after the match, Salah addressed questions about his future. “No, we are far away from that [contract], and I don’t want to put anything in the media,” he said. “The only thing on my mind is I want Liverpool to win the league, and I want to be part of that. I will do my best for the team to win the trophy. There are a few other teams catching up with us, and we need to stay focused and humble.”
Salah is not the only Liverpool star facing an uncertain future. Club captain Virgil van Dijk and defender Trent Alexander-Arnold are also out of contract at the end of the season. Despite this, Liverpool manager Arne Slot remains calm about the situation.
“I think I have a lot of control over what they do when they’re on the training pitch or in meetings,” Slot said. “But in their private lives, I don’t have control. On the pitch, I’m really pleased with what Virgil, Trent, and Mo bring.”
Contract Stalemate
Earlier this season, Salah expressed his disappointment with Liverpool’s failure to offer him a new contract. Following a win against Manchester City earlier this month, Salah admitted he approached the match as though it might be his last encounter with Pep Guardiola’s side.
Former Liverpool midfielder Danny Murphy remains optimistic about Salah’s future at Anfield. Speaking on Match of the Day, Murphy said, “I hope it’s a bit of gameplay in terms of negotiations. Every Liverpool supporter wants him to stay, and I’ve got a really positive feeling that he’ll stay and they’ll get it done. These things take time when you’re talking about huge amounts of money.”

Salah’s Record-Breaking Season
Salah’s statistics this season underline his significance to Liverpool’s success:
- He has scored and assisted in eight Premier League games this season, more than any player in a single campaign.
- Salah has been involved in 30 goals in just 18 Premier League matches (17 goals, 13 assists), a record-breaking feat in the competition.
- Across all competitions in 2024, Salah has contributed to 52 goals (29 goals, 23 assists), more than any player in Europe’s top five leagues.
- Salah has scored 20+ goals in all competitions for Liverpool in each of his eight seasons with the club, joining Premier League legends Alan Shearer and Harry Kane in elite scoring consistency.
Looking Ahead
Salah’s continued brilliance makes him irreplaceable in Liverpool’s current lineup, but his uncertain future looms large. Fans and analysts alike will watch closely as negotiations unfold. While Salah remains focused on securing the Premier League title for Liverpool, the club faces a critical decision to ensure their talisman stays at Anfield for seasons to come.
